The Brilliance Of Pearls

Pearls are one of the beautiful gemstones. The value of a pearl is known by its luster, surface, shape, color and size. Luster is the most vital factor in selecting pearls. The inner glow of the pearl combined with the surface brilliance reflect luster. Higher the luster, thicker the nacre or secretion from the oyster, the glow will become stronger. The cultured pearls of lower quality appear too white, chalky or dull.

The smoothness of the surface of pearl is also important factor to consider. Some pearls are clean but some other may become highly blemished. The breaks or cracks in the nacre are also considered damage. As these pearls are grown in the oysters and are organic gems so they are almost never flawless.

The quality of the pearl gem may have blemishes when these are seen very closely, but are noticeable at arm’s length. The shape of the pearls is also considerable; it is rare to find a perfect round pearl. A round pearl has more value. The pearls that are slightly off-round, semi-baroque and baroque, are not as valuable as the perfect round pearls, although they can be lustrous, appealing, having natural beauty and value of their own.

The cultured pearls range in various white to black with the different multi-colored overtones. The cultured pearls are measured in millimeters. Larger pearls are rarer and more valuable. Pearls are produced by a living organism, generally an oyster or a mussel. A pearl is produced by placing a bead inside the oyster, which then coats the bead with the nacre. A shell based pearl is an imitation, it is simply made by painting a shell bead with pearl paint. You should be careful of the brand named shell based pearls.
